Individual Therapy

Navigating life’s ups and downs can be challenging and, sometimes, downright overwhelming. New Life Counseling Center is here to help during times such as these. We offer a safe space where client and therapist can collaborate to identify and address the root of the issue. Our goal is to support our clients as they navigate the healthy changes they are desiring, whether that be individually or within a relationship.

Individual therapy basically means that one person is attending the therapy sessions, and only one person is in the therapy file. At New Life, this most often occurs with adult clients over 18 years old, although sometimes older teens might seek individual therapy as well (please see the pages on teens).

Individual therapy is appropriate when someone wants to address issues on their own, without bringing in other people such as in marriage or family counseling. Oftentimes individual therapy is well-suited for trauma work, for EMDR (see that page for more), or for processing issues like grief where one can want more ample time for sorting through things more personally. Sometimes people seek individual therapy when issues are primarily in one area of life, such as struggles at work. It really is up to the client to determine if the client prefers to work on things by oneself, or in a different therapy format involving others.

Furthermore, even when the presenting issue is in a relationship (such as with one’s spouse, or young adults working through things with parents), sometimes only one person is willing to come to therapy. In that instance, working with one motivated family member can actually be an efficient way of bringing change to a whole relationship system.

It can also be useful when having more than one person in the room feels too overwhelming, or the relationship issues are so intense that having individual sessions is most clinically appropriate. It is also suitable for stages in life when one is single, such as young adults, or post-divorce, or other transitional times.

How can New Life assist individuals seeking mental health treatment?. Whatever the presenting symptom (see the “Specialities” tab for more information), the therapist will pace with the client, inviting the client’s own thinking and self work, to steadily facilitate transformation over time. Sometimes individual therapy is the best modality for working on self.

Whatever the reason for seeking individual care, New Life Therapists will use a variety of ways of coaching the individual towards growth and transformation from a natural systems perspective. If one has a different way to approach long-standing difficulties, and has access to another in the form of a calm and well-trained therapist, individual clients can experience lasting change.

If you are experiencing an emergency, do not wait for a call back from New Life.
